Land Preparation — AWL Kenya

Landforce Rigid Spring Loaded Subsoiler

The Landforce Rigid Spring Loaded Subsoiler combines the deep penetration of a rigid subsoiler tine with spring-loaded protection that allows each tine to flex when it encounters a major below-ground obstacle — providing the best of both worlds in Kenyan conditions where stones and deep root systems are common.Working to a depth of 40–70 cm, the Landforce subsoiler shatters deep compaction layers and hardpan horizons well below the reach of disc harrows or chisel ploughs. Available in 3 to 7 tine configurations with working widths from 1.5 to 3.0 m and power requirements from 80 to 160 HP, the subsoiler can be matched to the specific farm scale and target depth required.AWL is the authorised Kenyan dealer for Landforce implements, with subsoilers available for sale and technical support from our Nakuru and Eldoret branches.

What sets it apart

Built to get more done per pass

Fine Seedbed in One Pass

Landforce disc harrows and offset ploughs break, turn, and level soil in a single field pass — saving fuel and operator time.

Heavy-Duty Robusto Build

Landforce's Robusto frame construction uses thick-wall steel and hardened disc blades rated for East Africa's tough laterite and black cotton soils.

Residue Incorporation

Aggressive disc angles effectively chop and incorporate crop residue, improving soil organic matter and reducing disease carryover.

Variable Working Width

Adjustable disc spacing and working width settings let operators match tool width to tractor HP and field conditions.

Fuel-Efficient Operation

Optimised disc geometry reduces soil resistance and tractor fuel consumption during primary and secondary tillage operations.

Proven Field Durability

Hardened steel discs, sealed hub bearings, and reinforced frame sections deliver multi-season reliability in Kenyan field conditions.

Applications

Where it earns its keep

  • Deep hardpan breaking on heavily compacted arable land
  • Sub-surface drainage improvement in waterlogged fields
  • Irrigation pan disruption in intensively irrigated fields
  • Reclamation of long-fallow or degraded land
  • Deep ripping before establishing perennial crops (orchards, tea)

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The Landforce rigid spring-loaded subsoiler works to a maximum depth of 40–70 cm, depending on configuration and soil conditions. This is significantly deeper than a chisel plough (30–45 cm) and far deeper than a disc harrow (15–20 cm).

At 40–70 cm depth, a subsoiler encounters more deeply embedded stones and obstructions than surface implements. If the tine cannot deflect, it will break — causing expensive downtime. Spring-loading allows the tine to flex and recover without damage.

On most Kenyan arable farms, subsoiling every 5–7 years is sufficient for hardpan management. If irrigation is involved, more frequent ripping (every 3–4 years) is sometimes needed to break irrigation-pan development.

Subsoiling is most effective when the soil above the hardpan is dry enough to shatter rather than deform. Working in very wet conditions may cause smearing of the tine track rather than genuine shattering.

Yes. AWL can demonstrate the Landforce subsoiler on your farm to show the depth and shattering effect before purchase. Contact our sales team to arrange a site visit.
