Land Preparation — AWL Kenya

Landforce SBS Heavy Duty Seed Bed Specialist

The Landforce SBS Heavy Duty Seed Bed Specialist is a combined tillage implement that integrates disc harrow, levelling board, and packer roller functions into a single machine, producing a drill-ready seedbed in one tractor pass. Designed for arable farmers who want to reduce the number of tillage operations, improve timeliness, and cut fuel costs while maintaining high seedbed quality, the SBS delivers consistent results across a range of Kenyan soil types. The first working section (disc gang) breaks and levels the primary tillage surface, the central levelling board smooths and redistributes soil, and the rear packer roller consolidates the seedbed to create the perfect balance of fine surface tilth and firm sub-structure for seed germination. Requiring 80–120 HP and working in widths of 3.0–4.0 m, the SBS is matched to commercial farm tractors.AWL stocks and supports the Landforce SBS in Kenya with genuine spare parts and technical guidance from our Nakuru and Eldoret branches.

What sets it apart

Built to get more done per pass

Fine Seedbed in One Pass

Landforce disc harrows and offset ploughs break, turn, and level soil in a single field pass — saving fuel and operator time.

Heavy-Duty Robusto Build

Landforce's Robusto frame construction uses thick-wall steel and hardened disc blades rated for East Africa's tough laterite and black cotton soils.

Residue Incorporation

Aggressive disc angles effectively chop and incorporate crop residue, improving soil organic matter and reducing disease carryover.

Variable Working Width

Adjustable disc spacing and working width settings let operators match tool width to tractor HP and field conditions.

Fuel-Efficient Operation

Optimised disc geometry reduces soil resistance and tractor fuel consumption during primary and secondary tillage operations.

Proven Field Durability

Hardened steel discs, sealed hub bearings, and reinforced frame sections deliver multi-season reliability in Kenyan field conditions.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The SBS works best after primary tillage such as subsoiling, deep chisel ploughing, or mouldboard ploughing. It is designed to complete the seedbed from a primary-tilled surface, not to replace primary tillage.

A disc harrow alone only cultivates and breaks up soil. The SBS adds a levelling board to smooth the surface and a packer roller to re-consolidate — producing a complete drill-ready seedbed that a disc harrow alone cannot achieve in one pass.

Optimal working speed is 8–13 km/h. The disc section benefits from higher speeds for good soil throw and mixing, while the rear roller needs sufficient forward speed to provide effective consolidation.

The SBS is effective in loam and clay loam soils. In very heavy clay, working conditions (moisture content) are critical — avoid working wet clay to prevent smearing the plough layer. Contact AWL for soil-specific advice.

Landforce offers different rear roller configurations. Contact AWL to confirm which roller options are available and which is most suited to your soil type and target seedbed specification.
