The Soilmaster 9 tine chisel plough requires 120–160 HP with a Category III three-point linkage. Under-powered tractors will fail to maintain working depth in hard conditions.
A single pass with the 9 tine covers 2.7 m versus two overlapping passes with a 5 tine covering 3.0 m — similar coverage but the 9 tine requires fewer operator hours and reduces compaction from extra tractor passes.
Chisel ploughs are generally suited to stony conditions as the rigid tines push through most stones. However, very rocky ground may cause tine breakage — contact AWL for soil-specific recommendations.
Wear rate depends heavily on soil type. Sandy, abrasive soils wear points faster than loam. Expect 50–200 hectares per set of points, depending on conditions.
