A hardpan is a compacted layer of soil (often at 20–40 cm depth) caused by repeated tillage at the same depth or by natural soil mineralogy. It prevents root penetration and restricts drainage, causing waterlogging and reducing yields. Chisel ploughing shatters this layer.
The 5 tine chisel plough works to a maximum depth of 30–45 cm, well below most cultivation pans formed by repeated disc harrowing at 15–20 cm depth.
In most Kenyan conditions, chisel ploughing every 3–5 years is sufficient to manage hardpan development, depending on soil type, crop rotation, and tillage practices. Sandy soils may need less frequent treatment.
